Curious Classroom Science Units

Curious Classroom Science Units are a brand new concept for the 2005-2006 school year. We currently have 3 units available-Light/Color, Sound and Electricity. These units are developed using the State Standards and Benchmarks for Kindergarten through 5th grade. The units can be taught at your school or on-site at the Museum. Contact the Museum at (269) 983-2543 for more information.

"Sound" or "Light' Classes

In a two-hour class at the Museum, your students will receive a general introduction to Light or Sound. After information and instruction by our certified, experienced teacher, Chris McQuillan, students will work with 5-8 different stations hosting a wide variety of Hands-On activities and experiments to understand your class level's objectives in Sound or Light. Students then utilize the Museum exhibits on 2 floors to make science predictions, try experiments and figure out why this exhibit works. Examples for Sound include but are not limited to: the Tubephone, Bottle Rocket, Pipes of Pan, Volcano eruption, drums & more. Exhibits used in Light units include: Bubble Chamber, Bubble Ballet, Holograms, Light Table and more.

What You'll Do:

  • Utilize Museum exhibits and Hands-on exercises in depth to understand the objectives
  • Describe sounds in terms of their properties
  • Explain how sound travels through different media
  • Explain how sounds are made
  • Explain how echoes occur and how they are used
  • Use prisms and filters with light sources to produce various colors of light
  • Explain how shadows are made
  • Identify forms of energy associated with common phenomena
  • Learn & do experiments at over 5 stations set up in each topic
  • Experiment with light concepts using student kits
  • Learn how light energy can be transformed
  • Develop and understanding of how the Eye & Ear really work
  • Make learning memorable by adding hands-on experiments not found in the classroom.

All units travel to your classroom with time-frames adapted to your needs.

"How Electricity is Made"

This exciting unit features Hands-On Instruction, Activites & Exhibits which take students through the process of making electricity. Students will also engage in hands-on activities about electrical safety. Units are designed for Museum instructional sessions or Offsite at your school. A huge new exhibit "How Electricity is Made" will be installed in the Museum.

What You'll Do:

  • Investigate the energy changes involved in making electricity
  • Explain how electricity works
  • Learn about Electrical Safety
  • Design and complete electrical circuits
  • Discover how electricity can be changed to another form of energy
  • Learn to make a wet-cell battery
  • Experiment with insulators and conductors

Electricity exhibits on-site and the portable classroom electricity safety exhibits are made possible by Indiana and Michigan Power and AEP- Heart of Cook.

HOW TO REGISTER and COSTS:

Curious Kids' Museum can accomodate two classes for an on-site visit. Each class will participate in two, 1-hour sessins at The Museum. Or, we can visit your classroom. Instructional visits can be set-up for anytime, lasting 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
